What happens if you handed Them the Keys: Moving from Assumed Breach to Assumed Insider

Will Bonk

Abstract:

For the last decade, the industry has optimized for “Assumed Breach” with a focus on Zero Trust and EDR to catch adversaries breaking in. But the threats have shifted. We are now entering the era of “Assumed Insider” where the adversary doesn’t need to break a window because you already handed them the keys, the VPN access, and the CI/CD pipeline.

Let’s dissect the infrastructure behind the modern insider threat and move beyond the scary headlines and into the technical reality of how we build, deploy, and defend systems against an adversary who is already on the payroll.
